Incompetence will continue as long as the leagues continue to cover for poor officiating. Rarely do conferences correct the officials and frankly the conferences shouldn't be in charge of their own officials. Subpar officials stay employed year after year and the Vanderbilts of the world get assigned the worst of the worst crews. The league doesn't correct anything. Their answer is to use fines to muzzle coaches and never address egregious game changing calls, like this one, to the fans. Officiating should be run by a neutral body that holds officials accountable.
