Quite simply not true. Brandon was an 87 on 247, composite 87. Rivals had him as a 4 * but 247, Scout and ESPN had him as a 3*. Austin was a 90 (4*) on 247, .89 composite (4*). Rivals had him as a 5.7 3*, but Scout and ESPN both had him as 4*s. Austin also had a better offer list, including Alabama, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, TN, UNC, Ok St & Az St. You seem to be hanging your hat on the fact that Brandon was the #7 PRO QB while Austin was #19. That is true, but it says more about the strength of the QB field in 2013 than anything. 2013 had 34 4* QBs according to 247 position rankings. 2011 only had 14. The top _8_ QBs in 2013 were PRO and the year was overall full of some very good PRO QBs. I think it is fair to say that Austin may be *more* talented than Brandon. It is also fair to say that he may be equally talented. Add to all this the fact that people who know both of them well say that Austin probably has the stronger arm, a bit more of a gunslinger mentality and on the field he surpassed everything Brandon did in HS (stats, wins, championships). Clearly Brandon worked out in a big way to finish out his career and there is no way to know if Austin will do better or worse than his brother, but you are hanging your statement that he "isn't nearly as talented" upon a very thin branch.
Austin Allen was higher rated coming out of high school and had a much better offer list. He is also considered by those who know both of them to be a bit more athletic than his brother. Inexperienced, yes. But the jury is definitely still out on whether he is a "lesser talent". Most would consider him at least the equal of his brother in talent.
Nope. Alabama went undefeated the first year of the SEC-W ('92, Stallings), and again in '09.
Not ludicrous at all. Arkansas returns 4 WR/TE with 250+ yards receiving. Those four combined for 2200 yards last season. Add in Keon Hatcher, as noted in the article, and you have 5 targets who have proven success against SEC defenses. No team has more returning receivers with comparable production. Ole Miss & Florida both also return 5 250+ yard guys and MSU returns 4 with comparable productivity (2200-2600 yards). The Aggies and 'bama return comparable productivity, but only 3 players. Arkansas was 3rd in the SEC in passing last season and only lost one top target. It should not be surprising that we return as deep a corp as anyone in the conference. The thing we are missing is a big name. We have a blue collar bunch of guys.
I agree that Ark-LSU was an artificial rivalry. But dude, you did not "dominate" us. The series is 5-5 the last 10 years and 14-10 since we joined the conference in '92. Hardly a dominating record.
They've proven they can scrape a QB out of the bargain bin at the last minute and win a NC. Even their bad years have been in contention and they are annoyingly consistent. Their worst season since 2008 was a "disastrous" 10-3 season that ended with a 40+ point beatdown of Mich State in the Cap One bowl. I'm no Alabama fan, but really, how could not not objectively rank them at or near #1 pretty much every Spring?
This is going to turn out as an epic case of "be careful what you wish for." The SEC is just going to do it bigger and better and soon the rest of college football will be whining again. Game on, a-----s.
There is no editing here. Journalism in general is decaying and sports journalism has not been renowned for its erudition. The author also misspelled Rhoads. This is the downside of having to listen to a radio interview--the inability to simply cut and paste the article really hampers productivity. He probably just dictated this article to Siri while waiting on another craft beer to arrive.
Arkansas not in bold type @ 24. Very reasonable list. I think the proof is in who the schools are able to attract as coaches when it comes time to hire. You could make serious arguments about the relative ranking of Ark, OM, and Sakerlina.
A better methodology, if you are seeking to determine how well the coaches kept the talent in-state would be to exclude any recruit who eventually signed with a non-P5 team and/or any recruit who did not show an offer from the in-state school or who did not have an offer from the in-state school at all. CBB has done a fantastic job of getting almost every Arkansas recruit that he offered. Much higher than 57%, and better than previous coaches as well. That has been a bright spot. I'm sure some of the other schools with a less bountiful in-state pool of talent would be similar.
It's not just the money but also the short lifespan of the position. I can only say good luck, Alex and thanks for being a Razorback.
Exactly. Silly to object at all. I despise Obama, but he was honoring the team as President of the US. It's an honor that you accept graciously no matter your party or politics.
What does Wisconsin have against female gymnasts? Seems sexist and uncultured to me.
To pile on a bit. Alabama fans would have appreciated the 1964 Arkansas defense. We only gave up 5.8 points per game and our last 5 regular-season games were shutouts. In that era Arkansas fans didn't get angry when the opponents won. They got angry if the opponents were allowed on our end of the field.
Football Writers Association and the (less well-known) Helms Athletic Association (not associated with Jesse Helms' at all). It should be noted that the 1964 National Championship was awarded by several organizations to Alabama before the bowls were played. Alabama went on to lose to #5 Texas (whom Arkansas beat). Arkansas was ranked #2 by the AP before the bowls, but were the only team left undefeated, after beating #6 Nebraska in the Cotton bowl. The post-bowl polls all selected Arkansas as the NC. As a result of this controversy, the AP announced that they would, in the future, release a final poll after the bowls--which is now standard practice. In 1965, pre-bowl #4 Alabama was again awarded the NC by the AP and the aforementioned Football Writers Association after beating #3 Nebrasks because both #1 Michigan State and #2 Arkansas lost their bowls. Before the bowls, Arkansas was the only team in the top-4 that was undefeated. As an Arkansas fan I don't dispute Alabama's claim to their 1964 championship--split and disputed championships were common in that era. However I think our claim is equally strong (perhaps a smidgen stronger) since Alabama went on to lose to a team we beat after the final (regular season) AP poll had been published.
Probably due to the combination of being the AD of a large athletic program with his responsibilities as Chairman of the CFP Selection Committee.
You said it yourself. DMAC did what he did on a mediocre team. Derrick Henry 2015 has three things that McFadden did not: 1) a defense 2) a passing game 3) a creative OC Everyone in the stadium knew DMAC was going to get the ball, between the tacklers, over and over. They knew that if he and Felix didn't move the ball, it wasn't moving. But Derrick Henry is a great back. If they had ranked him 1st I would not have objected.
I think you have Florida too low because 9 wins doesn't happen by accident and their defense *is* very good. That being said think they would have a rough time against us right now since we are feasting on teams that can't throw the ball effectively and we have been able to score on even the best defenses. That's why we beat LSU and Mizzou handily but went 50/50 in shootouts vs. the state of Mississippi.
Probably going by his perception of the final records and resulting pecking order and not taking into consideration which fanbase will best support each bowl--which is of course the main thing the bowls care about.
Barber is the wrong back for you guys. At the very least, he needs a change of pace guy to mix in. The problem is not with Barber, but with the running options he gives when combined with a non-dual-threat QB. So, he has some great runs, and he has some runs where he gets stuffed because the whole defense knows it's going to be a run up the gut on 1st down, and he had some runs where they tried to get him the edge but that is not really his game so he'd get strung out or TFL. He was definitely in beast mode in OT. Going away from him in that last OT period was probably ill-advised. He's a good back. Could be #3 here, could be as low as #6.
Well the passing was listed, but not pointed out. He's caught a few passes in past games, a couple that were pretty clutch, but in general we have not tried to get him the ball that way leading many to think it was a weakness (JWill was the more sure-handed of the two.) If he continues to do well in the short passing game, that will definitely round him out as a complete back.
He played the first OT sequence and the Kody Walker closed the rest out. He had a run for 2 yards and a pass reception for 4 yards. So, yes, he had 103 yards rushing in regulation. Also not mentioned is that he showed up big in the screen game this week, with 3 catches for 39 yards.
I like the idea of moving it back 5 yards every time. (15, 20, 25, 30, etc) I hate the idea of it being kicking-only. [Crazy stat: Arkansas is 8-1 in games that go to 3+ OT.]
That's because so many people have no class these days.
I thought you guys made those optional to account for JmfF? (Seriously, glad to see Aggie fans speaking out against low class behavior. A coach's family is off limits as long as they don't go out in public and say/do something stupid themselves.)
Yes. #17 nationally in run defense. My worry is that our #100 pass defense helps Dobbs re-start his Heisman campaign. D-Line has to pressure Dobbs without losing contain. Could be a great day for our D, or a very long one. Will be interesting to watch. WPS!
If they have talent there is always room on the Gus bus.
Article did not mention Town's stated reason for transferring: bad fit at USC. Sark is moving the Trojans from their traditional Pro-style offense to a Spread and Town, while pretty mobile for a pocket passer, is a throw-first QB. As soon as he announced he was transferring he immediately limited his search to teams running Pro-style offenses.
