First of all Paul Finebaum is not a sports journalist. He resides in the scum of yellow journalism, spreading juicy gossip and throwing out the red meat hoping as many of his rather sad viewers will latch onto it. He dwells in the negativity and is a bottom feeder. All SEC teams’ fans want to win. Many of them are terribly unrealistic and gain their “manhood” from how successful their team is. As for Gus, he is in a tough situation, given that he has to play LSU, Georgia and Alabama every year. Yes, the expectations of Auburn fans are high; probably unrealistically high. I personally don’t see the upside of buying out Gus at this point. It’s not like they are not a top tier team. I expect Auburn to play very competitively against both Georgia and Alabama.
As an AU grad I have been to games in Athens and had no problems. Of course, it has been a few years and I was not at the last game. I have observed horrendous fan behavior at Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. Mostly you are dealing with drunks. I was at the home game with Texas A&M and heard several of the A&M fans say the behavior in AU was the best they had ever seen. Obviously, this is what we all strive to hear. As for Georgia, I have always looked at the rivalry between AU and UGA as a family thing. We are very similar land grant institutions and look at the connections that go on and on, from Vince Dooley, to Pat Dye, to Erk Russell. I certainly hope that we can recognize that both institutions are outstanding in every way and we should not allow some bad drunks to spoil that. Yes, I know that Mark Richt is a quality man. Usually the players on both sides exhibit class behavior; sometimes you have some problems. I congratulate the Dawgs in absolutely taking my tigers to the woodshed last Saturday. I hated it but at the end of the game the fans should behave exactly like the players. Shake hands, congratulate each other on a hard fought contest and move on. Finally, if you see one of your own fans exhibiting bad behavior the worst thing you can do is laugh or encourage the behavior. Call them out and and tell them this is not the way your school's fans behave. Cheers, HiCountry a Proud Auburn Grad
