There is no way those players coordinated the attack to have one knock him down and the second spear him after on their own. I'd be willing to bet that the play was immediately preceded by a timeout, at which time the coaches cooked up the plan to take out an official who was clearly at fault for them losing the game[/sarc]. All parties involved should be charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit a felony. Short of that, the officials should refuse to officiate ANY game involving the school.

Are the athletic departments in question running deficits? Are general funds that come from taxes or tuition used to supplement the athletic department? Also, how does being successful in athletics affect new student application numbers and the academic quality of new students accepted? Without answering these questions, we can't get a complete picture of the costs and value of athletics at institutions of higher learning.
