I like it and have always liked Kanell. I'm always surprised at how serious people seem to take Kanell's SEC comments or how easily they fall into his trolling. I think he makes the discussion a little more fun as opposed to the life-and-death seriousness with which a lot of people deal with college football.
Good piece - I think it outlines the challenges Eason faces in a fairly balanced manner. The one thing I wonder about any time any quarterback is being analyzed is what the full picture is. While I would not argue Eason can stand to be more accurate/efficient this season, I also wonder how many drops from his targets factor into his 55% completion rate. This is when having more complete advanced metrics matters a lot to telling the story of where the real issues may reside.
I cannot even begin to describe how disappointed I am you did not intend that pun.
These kinds of trends never feel incredibly relevant to me. Different coaching staffs. Different players. Different culture. Different everything. The only constant is the school itself and the location. I get it if maybe the Dome doesn't lend itself to as rabid or loud a level of support... but that can't be a deciding factor.
The body of work on Lambert is out there and while he did have one record-setting passing game last year, most of the rest of the time he was fairly pedestrian. So it becomes a comparison of the uninspiring known vs. the inspiring (but totally unproven) unknown. If Lambert starts on Saturday, I think he has a VERY short leash and if he looks like he did down the stretch last season in the 1st half, I would not be surprised if Eason started the 2nd half.
You, good sir, win the day on this one. Well-played.
Fair question - trying to recall if the committee has ever stated that they have looked at or made use of this poll the last 2 years.
As a powerlifter myself, those are some very legit lifts for someone his age... and it becomes even more notable to see him doing it as a quarterback. Pretty cool.
I think Coach Smart is just trying to control the outsized expectations most UGA fans have for Eason. The kid has special talent, but the last thing you want is him stumbling early and a fanbase that can get a bit unrealistic to suddenly pounce on him. He's going to make some exceptional plays... and some exceptionally bad ones too. People need to accept that.
This has been my general take too. He clearly has demons/issues, but I hope he works them out just as a fellow human being. I take no joy in what he's going through. That being said, the public-at-large seems to be pretty sick of all his talk on making good without any concrete actions to back that up. He probably has to hit utter rock bottom before he really could begin to make changes.
Man, I hope Eason is good enough to leave after his junior year. hahaha Nice problem to have.
My math feels off. Eason's freshman year "begins" this Fall (football-wise) while this kid would be a junior. So if he came to UGA, he would be a freshman while Eason was a junior. So maybe 2 years of waiting, correct? Granted, I can see how the absolute elites want to play immediately, hence sitting a single year doesn't always seem likely. Just trying to be sure I did not miss something obvious here.
"If Kirby can just reduce this by 10%, that would be a game-changer." <- THIS. The move from good to great isn't really about massive overhauls, but those 10% increments. Could not agree more.
I do think it's partly because he is friends with Kirby, but it also speaks to why Georgia fans were getting impatient with Richt - there's a devoted fan base, they are starting to spend money on facilities (indoor practice field comes most readily to mind) and some of the country's best recruits within the state. With all of that, it really should be one of the best, if not the best, job in the conference. Now it's about proving that to be the case and not resting on the laurels of a national championship from more than 30 years ago.
I don't see how Eason doesn't get a chance to start right out of the gate. I am not so ridiculous as to hang messiah status on an incoming status, but given how woeful QB play was last year, I can't believe you wouldn't seek to see what your 5 star QB can do.
As a Dawgs fan, getting Cochran would be a huge coup. I think the S&C coach is a such a highly underrated part of a program's success. As much as I don't like 'Bama, I will give Saban a ton of credit for seeing the value in the role... especially when you consider that the S&C coach gets a ton of access to the players during periods when the football coaches are restricted from doing so.
I could see that being a pretty good fit (especially as a former 'Cane QB), but the biggest challenge is Miami does not seem willing to spend big on coaching salaries, facilities, etc.
Good to see, but would also be great if Ganus gets a shot in one of these senior showcases.
I am torn on all of this in relation to CMR, but your points are very good ones. I tend to be more cautious on the idea of ditching a head coach because "he can't win the big one", especially when that coach has a ton of success with his program on a variety of fronts. For me, the question for people calling for CMR's job is... who else is out there? Who would replace him? And would that be better? I think Charlie Strong is a very good coach, but look how that is going for Texas after Mack Brown was forced out.
Let's also bear in mind that he's a high school junior getting microphones put in his face to comment on things. He is not going to likely be the most mature and polished in everything he will say at that point. But beyond that, the 5 star/4 star rankings can be incredibly political and subjective. There are guys who are docked a star by ranking services because of which camps they do or do not attend.
It's Skylar Grey covering "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer. The line is "another kiss is all you need".
I'm a proud UConn grad, but I can absolute assure you most times in FBS are a tougher match-up. I think UConn will improve a lot under Diaco, but it ain't happening just yet.
Ditto - not sure how a game vs. SC rises to the level of 'Bama at home.
