A very "knowledgeable" fan said the following: "Alabama was successful before Bryant, he didn’t turn a nobody into a somebody." He doesn't seem to remember that Bama"s 3 year record prior to Bear was as follows: 1955 Alabama 0–10 0–7 12th 1956 Alabama 2–7–1 2–5 T–8th 1957 Alabama 2–7–1 1–6–1 10th Alabama: 4–24–2 3–18–1 As a student there then, I suffered through them all! Bear arrived too late to recruit, so only had players from the previous year. All of the fall '57 practices were described in papers as "Bryant runs off another star! When asked how he expected to win by running off all the stars, he said,"A team that doesn't win but 4 games in 3 years, doesn't have any stars!" Bear's first year record was 5-4-1, guess he did do something!
