In all levels of sports it has been my experience that the more aggressive teams (read, "more athletic" generally) are going to benefit from favorable calls/no calls.
John, Ramsey coming in just before the end of the first half was likely predetermined. Over his career at UGA, that has been the Richt way for managing the QB position when the starter is not a seasoned starter. There are numerous reasons why this is a smart way to handle two QBs in an early season, medium stress level game. Chubb needs to hold up for the season, his work, at 19 carries was done. Better, to get quality reps to his backups. The lack of a vertical threat is a concern but considering that everyone felt UGA should show their cards against a weaker opponent, let's not get hung up on the obvious (need for vert. passing) until we need it and it isn't there (say, next week vs. USC). Besides, what I read throughout camp was that, following an initial shaky start to camp, Lambert threw nicely and had touch, accuracy on the deep throws. Defense was solid. It is refreshing and reassuring to watch a well-coached and disciplined defense. They knew how to line up and played fast. Yes, late in the game the replacements did give up yards and some points but they gained valuable experience. If I have a concern about the D, it's about defending a dual threat QB who can read coverage AND throw with accuracy (but what team wouldn't find that a challenge?). Apart from concerns about the QB position (next Saturday will provide a lot of answers), my biggest concern is the blocking of the "A" gaps with the center and guards. From network TV coverage, it is difficult to determine what/who the issues are (my suspicion is that the center needs to really step it up), but in both games, there has been too much penetration through the A gaps. Overall, I am as excited about the potential of this squad as I've been in some time. Go Dawgs!
