No excuse for what she did. To make the assumption the umpires didn’t take action because she was a black female is disrespectful to the umpires and to all female athletes. I am not a parent. She didn’t cheat, steal, fight, rape or pillage. Can’t say the same for D1 football players over the years and we both know that we hear - heat of the battle, emotions, fired up. Coach benched her. We don’t know what else. 50+ games no Ole Miss player or coach ejected or warned by umpires in any of them. I haven’t seen or heard any one make an excuse for her. I have issue with the article because it is sensationalized. You get a better detail by going to JustinsworldSB. My bet is that every one commenting didnt watch this game or any Ole Miss games. Attacking rhe players character, the teams character, the coaching staffs character over this is incident is over the top. None of them are Saints, they are athletes in a completion.
Balkwyll got it right. So, what did he report (Spencer, the next Red Smith for this story)? You have a video from a cell phone of the action from his TV in his living room with nothing else explained about it. That a player ran off the field pushed an Umpire as she ran between her and the coach, a dumb thing to day, and totally out of line (But a giant headline? I guess it was a slow news day?), She was benched by her coach and reprimanded and the game went on. The Umpires that were there in person on the field, all four of them, didn't say anything about it, didn't even acknowledge it. Coach benched her, not because anyone asked her to, because she was handling the situation. No one was ejected, no one was even warned. The only people that think it was a big deal are the people "Spence" riled up. I guess to some this counts has deep journalistic reporting. Tell us, all knowing Westsidedog, what exactly has the Ole Miss team done all year long to show disrespect, how about specifics. Tell us how "all" these "woke" college student Softball players at Ole Miss are classless and with no dignity. Tell us how many times an Ole Miss player argued a call this year, tell us how many times the coaching staff left the box or dugout to argue a call. Tell us how many ejections or warnings Ole Miss players and coaches received this year. And be honest here, there is fact checking. Then tell us about Fouts putting one in the side of Gillespie intentionally and getting warned by the umpire. Alabama has a great program, some great players, great history, the coaching staff is outstanding and the girls play clean and hard, but don't throw too many stones. So, give us the specifics if you want to make a claim. The whole team has taken on this classless, no dignity Persona, give me some facts. Coach better get control of what exactly? You have no clue or idea what the coach said, did or what actions were taken after the game. And after you are all done, tell me what you have against Arizona State, what the heck did they do to you? You either don't like successful Women coaches like Ford and Trachsel, that are both highly regarded and respected in the softball world or you may be upset because Jimmy Kolaitis left UAB for Arizona State?
Plus, I think Adam in his article did no justice to the true story and intentionally wrote it in a way to stir controversy. This is disappointing because Adam normally is a really good reporter. He intentionally left out a lot of specifics that caused this to become more controversial than it was to all involved.
The Umpire didn't think it was as big a deal as some of you. Didn't eject the player, didn't even call her out for the confusion of leaving the field of play. Coach reprimanded a typically very respectful, very positive, no negative history player that is known to give back to the Oxford community in time. In an emotional NCAA Regional playoff game that was impacted by questionable calls by both teams all game long the Umpire behind the plate let emotions trigger the issue. Bases loaded, potential rally, teams hottest hitter on the weekend is called out on strikes (that the announcers on ESPN also questioned), she turns and said "that has not been a strike all night and it should never be a strike". The PAC 12 plate Umpire than determines the next hitter took too long to get in the box between pitches (replay shows it was under ten seconds) and calls a strike (the only time this was called on any hitter in the Regionals). His gesture caused confusion and both teams left the playing field thinking he called it the third out of the inning. Jones made a judgement error, left the third base and headed to the dugout, when she did she pushed through her coach and the Umpire. All the baloney about "woke", lack of respect for authority and little girls watching is all hype by people that have an opinion of things and people they know nothing about and trying to disguise what they really are trying to say about the player, and anyone that reads this understands that exactly. Coach handled it perfectly.
