It's not 1940 anymore. College football is a national sport with almost all the games available for viewing anywhere you live . The whole "Northeast kids don't know a guy who built his reputation in the south " thought makes zero sense.
He seems to be an old school coach that builds a system and recruits specifically to his blue collar system. It takes years and I'm not sure many of the powerhouse house schools would give him the time necessary to build it. He was realistically extremely close to being fired at UK in year 4 as attendance plummeted. An upset of then ranked Louisville is likely all that got him one more season... and that's when he turned the corner in Lexington
