He was a JUCO transfer who came in behind 2 5-stars, so no one expected him to play much. He did have an offer from Florida as well, so it's not like he doesn't have any talent.
I wouldn't be 100% sure of that. USCw has a certain amount of disdain for the spread / up tempo approach, and the nouveau riche schools that run it. It wouldn't be that different from Alabama choosing to go that direction, they think they're too good for anything but pure traditional pro-style.
For some reason this feels like the Bo Pelini tape, or Dennis Franchione's secret news letter. Like maybe a booster, who has decided he wants Jones replaced, has leverage on him and is threatening him with it if he doesn't step down kind of thing.
To be fair the Christian Kirk one wasn't really a drop, it was a great play by the defender to knock it away. You want a receiver to catch it whenever he gets his hands on it, but when the defender puts his helmet on the ball before you've had a chance to pull it into your body he's going to jar it loose pretty much every time.
Clay Jr is their uncle, but Clay Sr is their grandfather not great uncle. Clay Jr and Bruce are brothers.
I argued til I was blue in the face with several Rivals people about the Manziel ranking. I got the fact that his measurables made it very possible that his game wouldn't translate to the next level. But his productivity was off the charts. And anyone with any football knowledge who watched the kid on film could see he had "it". If he had been 5 inches taller he would have been a 5-star recruit, even without any increase in arm strength imo. I won't claim that I foresaw the first ever freshman heisman winner, much less that he'd win a heisman at all, but a lot of us who watched film on the kid aren't at all surprised that he outplayed the 3-star ranking. It was a terrible call even at the time. 3-star measurables and 5+-star productivity should have averaged out to a 4-star ranking in my opinion. That still would have been low as it turned out, but at least it would have been justifiable.
