You have 11 conferences in the FBS if you count the independents (ND, BYU, Army). Make them join a conference and you'd get a 10 team playoff, keep them independent and throw in wild card opportunities for the other spot, have 12 team or 14 team playoff..

There are 10 Conferences in the FBS, 11 if you include the independents. Each conference champion gets a playoff spot. Throw in a couple wild card opportunities or make the independents join a conference and let the bowl games be the playoffs like it is now. Season stays the same length. Loser gets eliminated. Not that difficult to comprehend, similar to the NFL and High school playoffs...
