Good point. The reason we are in this point is US. Not any politician of either party. It does not matter if we are open, each of us makes the choice to go to a bar or a restaurant. The fact that it is open does not mean we have to go and possibly participate in spreading the virus. Each of us can wear a mask in stores and building without a politician making us. Ultimately, however, the path of this is due to US, each of us, collectively.
Thank you for keeping this in perspective. You make a valid point, especially since there is no reasonable rationale that anyone should think 61k are from the flu (I know that is not YOUR point).
On the vast majority of issues facing us, I would agree. However, the nature of this virus is that it is not just about you. If you decide you want to take action A and you wind up infected, you could very well spread that virus to someone else, either someone you love or a stranger. It's not about "shaming" someone for their choice, but asking that they be considerate of their capacity to harm others unintentionally, a harm that could result in someone's death. That's not to say we should completely shut down society, but there are some sacrifices that society has to make, even if they are inconvenient or something we would rather not give up. I love college football. Aside from Formula 1, I could not care less if all other sports are cancelled, but I would hate to lose it. However, scientific experts have cast doubts on whether it should go forward. (To hear an epidemiologist discuss this, I would recommend the AP College Football Podcast where Ralph Russo talks to a UT-grad epidemiologist.) The potential impact of college sports could be much wider than pro sports where the athletes have no other responsibilities than their game. College athletes are also college students and they have to mix with the rest of the student body. Given that the sport is obviously close proximity, that's a possible vector to spread this virus to other student groups, other cities, other states, etc. I hope we don't lose college football, but at the end of the day, for the majority of us, it's a game that might have to go until we clear this virus.
