For Florida head coach Dan Mullen, it wasn’t just Emory Jones’ dual-threat athletic ability that impressed him.

In fact, it was the intangibles that Jones brought to the table which most impressed Mullen, a 247Sports GatorBait.net report pointed out on Thursday.

The Gators officially signed the super-elite, 4-star quarterback on Wednesday — the first day of the inaugural Early Signing Period in college football. But Mullen and Jones made contact long before that, notably, through an important text message.

“When all is said and done, I’m your man, I’m going to help you win championships at Florida,” a text from Jones to Mullen said.

The Gators’ head coach apparently didn’t need to hear anything more.

That text message arrived just four days before 4-star QB Matt Corral decommitted from Florida, the 247 report noted. Perhaps that’s why Mullen didn’t seem all that worried about it at the time.

“Just when you see a text like that, that’s what I want to see out of my quarterback, someone that has that confidence and that expectation, not worried about what jersey number or worried about a lot of the other stuff that goes on in recruiting,” Mullen said. “Someone who’s worried about coming in and doing what it takes to win.”

Athletically, Jones fits the mold that Mullen is looking for, too.

“He checks all of those boxes,” Mullen said. “Obviously he’s got a strong arm. I mean, he’s got the size and the athletic ability to improvise. He can also run the football but he can also improvise and extend plays, and he does have a cannon for an arm.”

And while all those physical skills are important when it comes to the game of football, Mullen is still enamored by that winning vibe Jones puts off.

“I think he’s a winner, and that’s the first thing you look for — a guy that has an ‘it’ factor about him and can go win football games for you,” Mullen said. “That attitude of being a winner, to me that, having the ‘it,’ it’s all the intangibles, being a winner, that’s it. He’s a winner. It starts there, of somebody that has that mindset.”
