Dan Mullen met with Gainesville media on Friday to provide the latest update on his first training camp as Florida head coach. Based on his opening comments, the Gator coach is satisfied with what he’s seen following the first week of practice as the team prepares for the first scrimmage on Sunday.

“I have been pleased with our aggressive nature and how we attack practices,” Mullen stated on Friday.

Of course, the biggest question in Gainesville is the team’s quarterback competition. It wasn’t long into his Friday presser before Mullen was asked to share the latest on the battle among the Florida signal callers. His answer was more of the same as it was earlier in the week, the answer will come in time.

“It’s learning to be a complete player, and that takes time,” Mullen said,”but I’ve seen improvement in those guys. Each of them have their own strengths they have to keep working on.”

On if one of the QBs could earn the job following Monday’s scrimmage:

“We’ll see. I’d love to figure it out and say this guy is the starter and go with it. As soon as we feel comfortable, and we feel that’s the route, I want to do it… I want to make sure that if we do name a starter, that those other guys are in the right frame of mind.”

That’s an interesting comment from Mullen and one fans may not take into consideration very often during competitions. The need to keep players engaged after losing a competition isn’t something all fans would think of but something a coach like Mullen must concern himself with at all times. While a starter will eventually be named in the near future, the backup not only has to be ready to go in case of injury, there’s no telling how quickly Mullen will yank the starter if he does not perform on the field.

Mullen shared some light on a timetable for the decision but noted the offense has not even been fully installed, which complicates things. He then said the decision would preferably be made well before game week.

“I really don’t want it to go into the game week, I’d love to get it done way before that,” he said.

Considering we are two weeks away from game week, expect the decision to be made within the next 14 days. Whether Mullen publicly announces the decision or not remains to be seen but the team should know which quarterback will take the field for the first time against Charleston sooner than later based on those comments from Mullen.
