Florida DC Todd Grantham comments on sideline shouting match with Dan Mullen during Kentucky game
Todd Grantham says there’s nothing to worry about after TV cameras caught Florida coach Dan Mullen tearing into his defensive coordinator.
“It’s a competitive deal,” Grantham told reporters in his Tuesday media availability. “We’re all in it for one goal: to go win. We’ve had a lot of success, and we have a lot of respect for each other and what we do. And because of that respect, we’re allowed to express our opinions on things and do what’s best for the team.”
Grantham made it clear that all is well between the two.
“We’re good,” Grantham added. “We’re great. I think because the respect we have for each other, the ability to have our opinions, it has allowed us to grow as coaches and our program to grow. We’ve won a lot of games together and look forward to winning many more.”
UF in-house writer Scott Carter shared Saturday that he saw the two together at a Gainesville restaurant after the game.

Grantham’s defense played notably better after Mullen’s outburst. The cameras will certainly be watching to see if Mullen tears into his assistant on the Neyland Stadium sidelines Saturday.
I hope they don’t need to discuss Christmas lights again this Saturday.
Grantham is either going to call an excellent game or fall into his bad habit of overthinking the scheme. It’s UT and they’re reeling so we shall see. Have to think a lot of D CO’s will be watching
The defense has gotten better for sure and I thought Saturday was there best game. They struggled to get off the field early, but the offense was worse than the defense at the beginning and the turnover led to the touchdown. Hoping the defense plays well this weekend and peaks in the Alabama game. Go Gators!
True
This reminds me of the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 1971. UCLA was playing Long Beach State in the Elite 8, and LB State was leading in the second half, when Coach Wooden called a timeout. Out of nowhere Wooden and his top assistant Denny Crum got into a shouting match, and briefly assistant Gary Cunningham at 6 foot 6 appeared to be having to separate them.
John Wooden explained that he had no use for “yes” men, and that he frequently had disagreements with coaches on how things should be done, but as head coach, he had the final call on issues.
He went on to state that Crum needed his own program, and that was Denny’s last year as assistant head coach at UCLA. He took the Louisville job and took the Cardinals to the Final Four in his first year. Maybe Grantham has reached this same point; he needs to go get his own head coaching job, preferably outside the SEC. He’d be fine for UL-Monroe, North Texas, or Utah St.
You need an ESPN channel show with you being the host. Kind of like the old NFL films with Sabol commenting and war drums playing in the background describing the game highlights.
Anyway, I enjoy your posts. Keep on keeping on man.
I second that. I enjoy your posts as well.
Wish Derek Mason could replace Grantham as D Coord next season, but doubt that ever happens. Mason and Mullen seem to really dislike each other. Mason with UF talent, would be a nasty Defense!
Charlie Strong.’Nuff said.
