The Florida Gators are through a quarter of their season and are in the midst of their first bye week after suffering a 42-21 loss at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Much has been discussed regarding Florida’s quarterback situation and issues at other positions, but after the first three games for Florida’s 2014 heralded recruiting class, how are the true freshmen performing?

We take a look at how some of the more notable true freshman have performed for the Gators in 2014.

RB Brandon Powell
Season stats: three carries, 24 rushing yards and one touchdown

The true freshman back saw a good amount of playing time in the Gators’ season-opener against Eastern Michigan and made the most of his only on-field action so far this season. He averaged eight yards a carry on three rushes and was one of three running backs to score a touchdown against the Eagles. Head coach Will Muschamp has expressed a strong desire to getting Powell more touches within the offense, so even though he hasn’t been a part of the gameplan recently, it appears Powell should play a bigger role moving forward.

DB Duke Dawson
Season stats: two tackles, one quarterback hurry, one interception and one touchdown

The freshman from Cross City, Fla. failed to record a tackle in three-straight games, but Dawson has been a pleasant surprise so far for Muschamp. The head coach has praised Dawson’s athletic ability so far, which he showcased in the team’s season-opener by taking his first career interception back for a touchdown. With the struggles of the secondary so far, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Dawson get more time in the usual defensive back rotation.

QB Treon Harris
Season stats: 2-for-2, 148 passing yards and two touchdowns

Perhaps the most intriguing of the Gators’ true freshman players is quarterback Treon Harris. He hasn’t seen the field since the game against Eastern Michigan, but his two touchdown passes certainly left an impact on Florida fans. Muschamp said earlier this week they’ll work him into the game to get him some snaps in the near future and Harris is currently getting support from fans to replace the struggling Jeff Driskel at starting quarterback.

DB Jalen Tabor
Season stats: four tackles, two tackles for loss and one pass breakup

Tabor came into this season as the highest-rated secondary recruit in Muschamp’s 2014 recruiting class. So far, the Maryland native has played in all three games at cornerback and recorded two tackles against Eastern Michigan and Alabama. Muschamp said Tabor has been improving every week and like Duke Dawson, should get even more playing time thanks to the struggles in the secondary. Tabor excels in open-field tackling and at 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, he’s one of the team’s most physical defensive backs, too.

DL Gerald Willis
Season stats: three tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry

Willis hasn’t seen the field since the season-opener, but that hasn’t kept Muschamp from praising the true freshman in his press conferences.

“He’s doing okay,” Muschamp said earlier this week. “Gerald’s a guy that has to understand day to day, week to week, to practice and prepare himself. I thought he had a good practice [Monday].” He’s got to continue to come on. He’ll be a good football player. He’s very talented.”

The true freshman has the versatility to play at both the end and inside lineman positions, so if Leon Orr is unable to go against Tennessee next week, Willis could get another shot to prove his worth.

DB Quincy Wilson
Season stats: five tackles

Like Tabor, Quincy Wilson’s playing time has been sprinkled throughout three games, but he may get a longer look moving forward. Wilson hasn’t impacted the game as much with the exception of some tackles, but as the season progresses, I fully expect Wilson to make some big strides in his game. He’ll be a big part of this UF secondary before too long.

WR CJ Worton
Season stats: one reception for eight yards

Worton’s impact has been minimal so far, which is surprising after how high Muschamp was on him prior to the season. He’s unfortunately broke his hand following the win against Kentucky, which will keep him out for a few weeks. It’s unclear right now when exactly he’ll be back, but there’s no question how much the coaching staff loves his playmaking ability.
