Kirk Herbstreit and other ESPN analysts don’t view the Florida Gators in quite the same way.

Just moments after former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow said that the Gators were closer to competing than their 4-5 record would indicate, Herbstreit shared his strong opinion on the matter on College GameDay.

“I disagree with what Tim is saying,” said Herbstreit, who played quarterback for Ohio State. “I think there needs to be a different approach. The reality in 2021 is when you have a team that is capable of winning a championship and making a playoff — this team was 3-1 and 10th in the nation – and then things got sideways after the loss to Kentucky. In my opinion, you can lose a team. They start to become more individually focused on whatever their aspirations are.

“I think that happened to Florida last year in the opt-outs for the bowl game and it’s happened again this year. You’re seeing a team that’s quitting on each other. They’re quitting on their coach. There’s a spirit that’s missing in their locker room. That’s a problem.

“I think you have to reevaluate who you recruit and who you bring on that roster, not just tweak a couple things in my opinion.”

While Herbstreit seemed to reference the mentality of Florida’s recruits, David Pollack said the overall talent is also an issue.

“I think it’s recruiting,” the former Georgia defensive end said. “You look at the best coaches in the nation consistently (and) the teams at the top, it’s recruiting and Florida is not a place that that’s hard to do. They’ve got a pedigree. They’ve got a background.

“Dan’s got to bring in guys. Listen, the thought that all these coaches across college football, all these assistant coaches, are great X’s and O’s guys, it’s not right. You’ve got to get the Jimmies and the Joes. It makes you look really, really good.”

Florida should look good today. The Gators host Samford in what is expected to be a lopsided game.
