Two current SEC coaches have won a national championship as a head coach (Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher). Three current SEC coaches have won the conference title as a head coach (Saban, Gus Malzahn and Kirby Smart). Florida’s Dan Mullen has yet to achieve either feat, but SEC Network and radio host Paul Finebaum thinks the Gators coach is better than at least one of those other four.

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg recently tweeted that his top five SEC coaches are (in order) Saban, Fisher, Smart, Malzahn and Mullen. Finebaum took issue with Mullen being fifth, replying to Greenberg, “Dan Mullen is too low on this list.”

Saban is universally regarded as the conference’s top coach, so Finebaum is implying that Mullen is better than at least one of Fisher, Smart or Malzahn. It’s high praise for the head Gator, as all three of the other coaches named have won a conference title as a head coach. Fisher won the ACC title three times (2012-14) and the BCS championship over Malzahn’s Tigers in 2013. Malzahn won the SEC in 2013 and Smart this past season.

Aggies, Bulldogs and Tigers fans are likely to take issue with Finebaum’s comment, but it illustrates why Florida made Mullen the fifth-highest paid coach in the country when he was hired in November.
