Here are some quick thoughts on Florida’s 10-9 comeback victory over Tennessee.

What it means: There’s no question that Florida is still full of issues on offense, but there was a definite spark within the unit once true freshman Treon Harris in the game.  Now the Gators have won 10 straight against the Tennessee Volunteers with the change at quarterback, it’s essentially an open book for the Gators and the rest of their season as long as Harris remains the starter. There’s no telling how Harris will respond as a starting quarterback in the SEC, but with a reenergized offense and a stingy defense, the Gators still control their own destiny in a wide-open SEC East race.

What I liked: The play of Florida’s young defensive players. Defensive end Bryan Cox Jr had a career day. The sophomore racked up three sacks on the day, pacing a Florida defense that recorded six sacks against a beleaguered Tennessee offensive line. True freshman cornerback Jalen Tabor got the start this week and the move paid off for Will Muschamp and the coaching staff. Tabor made an impact all over the field as he had three tackles, one pass breakup, one sack and one fumble forced that he also recovered. Based off Tabor’s performance today, it would seem like Florida has found their answer at cornerback opposite Vernon Hargreaves.

What I didn’t like: How long it took to make the switch at quarterback. It was clear early in the second half, and perhaps even sooner, that Florida’s offense was going nowhere with Jeff Driskel under center. After an additional two interceptions in the second half and multiple three-and-out drives, Muschamp finally made the switch and put Treon Harris in the game. How did the offense respond? They score 10 points on Harris’ first two drives and eventually held on for the victory.

Key play: When Treon Harris came into the game. Not only did the Florida freshman lead the Gators on two straight scoring drives when he became the starting quarterback, but there was a palpable renewed sense of energy among the Gators’ offensive players with No. 3 under center. Florida desperately needed to change things up and it paid off in a big way, despite it taking nearly three whole quarters to make the switch. The move led to 10 unanswered points and a victory in Neyland Stadium.

What’s next: Florida returns to Gainesville after two tough road games against Alabama and Tennessee and will take on LSU at The Swamp.
