5 Biggest Takeaways: Gurley shows he can do everything in win over Vandy
Georgia never really was tested by Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium. It was the Todd Gurley Show in the Bulldogs’ 44-17 win.
Here are five takeaways from the Bulldogs close win over the Commodores:
Todd Gurley continues to carry this team: Gurley had another big day, rushing for 163 yards and two scores on 25 carries. He also caught two passes for 24 yards and threw a 50-yard pass to tight end Jeb Blazevich, which stands at the Bulldogs’ longest pass play this season. It’s becoming more clear with each week that Georgia intends to ride its best player until an opposing team shows it can stop him. Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott made a big push in the Heisman race on Saturday afternoon, but Gurley showed his versatility and kept his status as frontrunner.
Bulldogs have no answer at QB: Mark Richt tried play it close to the vest during the week, but it only took two series before we saw freshman backup Brice Ramsay in the game. Hutson Mason completed 11-of-17 passes for 121 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Ramsay completed two of his four attempts for 31 yards. Richt said after the game that he’s not opposed to continuing to play multiple quarterbacks, but it’s clear that Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo have little confidence in Mason.
Defense starting to look more comfortable: The defensive performance of Jeremy Pruitt’s unit was arguably its best of the 2014 season. Georgia registered one takeaway and one sack, but was much more aggressive in its blitz packages. The secondary attacked and made plays on the ball, with several young guns seeing significant minutes in the defensive backfield. The play of the linebacker corps continues to be very good Pruitt and the Bulldogs, with Georgia linebackers combining for 31 tackles on the day.
Georgia can still likely win the East: I don’t even know where to begin when talking about the SEC East, but with a win at Missouri next weekend, Georgia would likely win the division. South Carolina is eliminated after its loss to Kentucky on Saturday night, leaving the matchup next weekend between the Bulldogs and Tigers essentially deciding the Eastern Division champion.
When will they put it all together?: The pieces are definitely there. If Georgia could put together a game in which it plays well in all three phases, the ‘Dawgs have the potential to be as good as anyone in the country, but inconsistency has plagued the Bulldogs through its first five games.
