Georgia started slow last weekend against Kentucky but kept on pounding and eventually broke the will of the Wildcats in Athens. The win gave UGA its first undefeated record against the East division since the SEC split into division play.

Now the Bulldogs hit the road for the first of two consecutive trips to Atlanta, first to play Georgia Tech before facing either Alabama or Auburn in the conference title game.

Kirby Smart spoke during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. Here’s a summary of what he had to say:

  • Opening comments: This is a big in-state rivalry against a unique offense to college football these days. We will have to be disciplined against an offense that’s tough to prepare for in a week.
  • Fullback runs of Georgia Tech: They are physical, have good balance. The QB does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield.
  • On UGA’s presence at Georgia Tech and other road games this season: It’s been beneficial. It shows the love and passion our fan base has for this program. It doesn’t affect the game but it makes it feel like home away from home.
  • How do you defend the pass vs. Georgia Tech? You are limited in what you can play. They do a tremendous job of highlighting your mistakes. They watch the coverages you play and they take advantage of it. There is no perfect coverage, only perfect eyes and even then, they can take advantage of it. I don’t think anyone understands how difficult it is to play coverage against this team.
  • What have you noticed about GT’s pass game? They get guys open with big plays. They are unbelievable blockers down the field while being good receivers. They find ways to get open.
  • On the difficulty of preparing for the option: At Alabama, we never had to prepare for the triple option before playing in the SEC Championship Game. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. We basically have to throw out our defense for a week and come back to it next week. It really sets you back a week.
  • How dangerous can Florida be if they hire the right guy? They are all dangerous in the SEC my friend.
