In a move that’s long been expected, former Kentucky and Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood has landed at a new school. And now he has received immediate eligibility to play at Central Florida under his old coach, Gus Malzahn.
Gatewood’s status was reported by Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel.
Gatewood in recent weeks lost out on the starting quarterback job at Kentucky when coach Mark Stoops named Penn State transfer Will Levis as the winner of the QB job.
Gatewood left Auburn for Kentucky before last season and threw for 109 yards and an interception with 62 yards rushing in limited action. Gatewood saw mostly limited action, except against Georgia when he was 15-for-25 passing for 91 yards. He had 16 carries for 23 yards.
Overall, he didn’t see the field in 4 games last season.
However, at Auburn, Gatewood also lost out on a competition with Bo Nix, and this season the Knights have Dillon Gabriel returning at QB, so it’s unknown when Gatewood may be in the mix to play quarterback.
