When the New York Knicks were on the clock with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft on Thursday night, fans were chanting for Mizzou F Michael Porter Jr.

Instead, the Knicks took Kentucky F Kevin Knox, earning the team and player a chorus of boos as Knox shook hands with commissioner Adam Silver on stage.

Shortly thereafter, though, Knox heard from current Knicks superstar Kristaps Porzingis, who was also booed by fans on draft night. Knox said that Porzingis told him to use the boos as motivation when the season starts (via ESPN’s Ian Begley):

“He asked me how the fans reacted and I told him I got the same amount of boos as you got,” said Knox, who appeared to get a much tamer reaction from the crowd than Porzingis did two years ago. “….He just laughed and he said, ‘It’s all motivation and fuel to the fire.’ He said, ‘Just work. Sooner or later they’ll be cheering for you.'”

Knox will have a chance to crack the starting lineup as a rookie, and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with his playing time.

Most fans probably regret booing Porzingis on draft night, so Knox will try to be the latest player to prove fans wrong.
