Les Miles and what remains of his recruiting staff will need to push into overdrive over the next few weeks to salvage LSU’s 2015 signing class.

Wednesday’s news of defensive coordinator John Chavis’ departure to Texas A&M sent a shockwave through Baton Rouge and many of LSU’s heralded commits and current targets have already voiced their opinion on the decision at various all-star game sites around the country.

Daylon Mack, a five-star defensive tackle from Gladewater, Texas who was once committed to the Aggies, has placed Texas A&M back in the mix after hitting the reset button on his recruitment this week while practicing in Orlando for Friday’s Under Armour game.

Mack will take an official visit to Texas A&M on Jan. 23 and already had trips to TCU and LSU planned. The Chavis hire in College Station is expected to impact his decision.

Four-star cornerback Justin Martin, once an LSU lean, announced Wednesday that he is headed to Tennessee.

“I’ve officially committed to Tennessee,” Martin said. “I wanted to go to LSU but then Chavis left to go to Texas A&M.”

The move could also help Butch Jones and the Vols land sought-after defensive end Kyle Phillips. Phillips is practicing for this weekend’s Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio this week, where he is expected to announce his commitment on Saturday.

247Sports reported Wednesday that Chavis’ exit ‘definitely changes’ Phillips’ final decision between LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

“It does a lot,” Phillips said to the recruiting outlet. “Him and they were saying the D-line coach is leaving too. That might have a big impact on me because I don’t know what a new coordinator is going to do and I have to make a decision this week. It is pretty complicated so we’ll see how it goes.’

Nashville native and three-star defensive back Ugo Amadi, who committed to LSU before the Tigers’ bowl game on Tuesday, hasn’t backed off his decision according to 247Sports’ Barton Simmons.

Five-star cornerback commit Kevin Toliver II out of Jacksonville, Fla. told Sonny Shipp he plans to enroll at LSU next week and that Chavis’ departure won’t alter his choice.

“It is what it is,” Toliver said on Wednesday in Orlando. “I know the defense might change but I know coach (Corey) Raymond will be there and he is the one I am the closest to. He is the one I will be with at practice and he is the one I will be with 24/7.

“LSU is still going to have that defense that people want to play in and I’ll sit down with the new coordinator and we will talk about all of that. I committed to LSU because it’s LSU.”

Toliver’s father, Kevin, isn’t as anxious.

LSU currently sits No. 15 overall for next year’s class according to 247Sports. Texas A&M is just outside the Top 5 at No. 7.

The Tigers’ last signing class to finish outside the Top 20 came in 2002. Once the dead period ends in two weeks, LSU’s staff will work tirelessly to ensure that doesn’t happen.

In the meantime, Miles will begin making calls to prospective candidates to fill his DC opening, a crucial hire in recruiting crunch time.
