John Chavis has been the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M for an entire season now, but his dispute with his former employer remains the biggest headline surrounding the well-regarded coach.

The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger is reporting that LSU has admitted to altering the contract of its former defensive coordinator after he signed it.

Chavis appeared at a hearing for his case against his former employer on Thursday, which reportedly resulted in a judge granting a motion that will force Chavis to hand over his phone records from a period of time stretching three months, beginning in November of last year.

Dellenger’s report says that LSU altered the contract without Chavis’ knowledge back in 2012.

It quoted the Chavis’ attorney on the outcome of the latest revelation:

“It’s exactly what coach has been saying all along, that the contract was altered after he signed it in 2012,” said Jill Craft, attorney for Chavis. “You can’t alter a contract and try to claim it’s valid and you certainly can’t sue over it. One of the things they did admit was altered was the buyout provision. In some sense, it’s vindication.”

LSU still claims Chavis owes the program money for breaking his contract, while the coach is seeking damages for defamation of character.
