The roster move was likely financially motivated.
The release of Maclin clears $10 million cap space since he was a post June 1 cut.

Maclin was a first-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. He played six seasons with the Eagles (2009-14), making the Pro Bowl in 2014 before joining the Chiefs prior to the 2015 season.
After back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2014 (1,318 yards) and 2015 (1,088 yards), Maclin’s production dropped off last season in Kansas City. He played in only 12 regular-season games, recording 44 catches for 536 yards and two touchdowns.
Maclin took part in Chiefs’ organized team activities last month.
