Florida guard Alex Kovatchev announces plans for 2026-27 season
Florida has been working to retain as much talent as possible for next season and has now reached an agreement to bring back reserve guard Alex Kovatchev for the 2026-27 campaign.
Kovatchev announced that news on Wednesday afternoon:
Kovatchev was a late addition for the Gators’ roster in 2025-26, joining the program in July. He had a very limited role during his first season in Gainesville, playing in just 15 games.

Kovatchev previously played at Sacramento State but was limited to just 4 games in 2024-25. As a freshman in 2023-24, he made 12 starts and averaged 5 points per game.
However, with Xaivian Lee out of eligibility, Florida will have at least one opening in its back court rotation next season. Starting guard Boogie Fland has already announced his intentions to return to Florida for his junior season.
Much of Florida’s roster uncertainty for next year lies in the frontcourt. Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chenyelu are all potential NBA Draft selections, but each also has college eligibility remaining.
Florida will be hoping to make it back to the Final Four in 2026-27 after a disappointing early exit in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
