Kansas coach Bill Self releases statement announcing return for 2026-27
Kansas’ second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament prompted many to spin the rumor mill when it came to Bill Self retiring, but after taking some time to deliberate, the Jayhawks’ head coach has revealed that he’ll return to patrol the sidelines at Allen Fieldhouse next season.
Self took to social media to announce his return, citing his ‘renewed clarity’ and ‘ongoing support from our administration’ as the primary reasons why he feels confident in coming back.

Self has enjoyed a wildly successful run as head coach in Lawrence, a stint that extends all the way back to 2003.

The Hall of Famer’s résumé is extensive, headlined by having won just under 80% of the games (634-167) he’s coached in while at Kansas. Self also boasts a 52-23 career record in the NCAA Tournament, a pair of national titles, over 10 conference tournament crowns and 20-plus regular-season championships.
Self originally began his coaching career in Lawrence as an assistant in 1985 before working his way up to being head coach at Illinois from 2000-2003.
