Auburn basketball head coach Steven Pearl spoke to media on Monday to, among other items, break down Auburn‘s hiring of former Louisville assistant Brian Kloman as the Tigers’ new GM.

Specifically, Pearl was asked why he decided to bring Kloman into the fold. Here’s what Pearl had to say, via AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus:

“If you look at the landscape of college basketball, it’s just a really important piece,” Pearl told Rauterkus. “One, getting prepared, getting organized, and being ready to attack the portal in a way that can put you in a position to have an advantage.”

As mentioned, Kloman joins Auburn after spending a few years at Louisville under head coach Pat Kelsey. Kloman and Kelsey have worked together for the past 11 years according to Auburn’s website, dating back to Kelsey’s time at Charleston and Winthrop. Kloman’s official title with Louisville was Executive Director of Player Personnel and Strategic Initiatives, and he helped rebuild a Louisville roster that would go on to appear in a pair of NCAA Tournaments after several down years.

When asked why he targeted Kloman, here’s what Pearl had to say:

“For them to completely revamp and flip that roster and go to back-to-back NCAA tournaments and be in the top 3-5 in the ACC every year since they’ve been there is substantial,” Pearl said, via AL.com. “He’s been with Coach Kelsey all the way from Winthrop to Charleston, now to Louisville. For a coach to continue to advance and rise, he obviously has to have a great staff. BK is one of the guys that was really instrumental in their success.”
