Fret not, LSU: Polls say you’re still a top 10 team

LSU fans — not to mention players and coaches — must feel pretty rough this morning.

And not just because Alabama consistently walloped the Tigers at the line of scrimmage or in the backfield.

LSU (7-1) no longer is among the nation’s remaining unbeaten teams. It lost control of the SEC West race. And it no doubt will fall out of the College Football Playoff committee’s top 4 on Tuesday.

Still, the Tigers remain a top 10 program, according to the major polls released Sunday. The Coaches Poll ranked LSU at No. 4, and the Associated Press ranked it No. 9.

There’s not much shame in falling to the SEC’s top-ranked team on the road, even if the gap at times seemed wider than the 30-16 final margin.

LSU must regroup, as the Tigers now face a pair of offenses that combined for 105 points in one overtime Saturday (Arkansas and Ole Miss). Win those, and coach Les Miles can notch yet another 10-win season — despite the cancellation of the season opener.

So yes, LSU has slipped in the opinion of coaches and national media. But not all that far.
