TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It obviously didn’t work, but the University of Alabama tried to start the Iron Bowl with an onside kick.

Sophomore Adam Griffith, who has been dealing with a back issue, ended up kicking the ball out of bounds.

“It was an onside kick, a blooper,” Coach Nick Saban clarified on Monday. “It didn’t bloop very good.”

Auburn ended up giving Alabama the ball right back with a lateral for a fumble on its first play. The turnover led to the first touchdown of the 55-44 game.
