TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After being overlooked for his first three 100-plus yard receiving games this season, University of Alabama junior wide receiver Amari Cooper was named co-SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Cooper’s 201 receiving yards on 10 catches were the third-most in Alabama history, and set the Crimson Tide record at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The two other 200-yard games ever recorded by an Alabama player were both on the road: Julio Jones’ 221 yards at Tennessee in 2010 and David Palmer’s 217 at Vanderbilt in 1993.
Cooper also became just the fourth player in Alabama history to catch three touchdowns in a single game during the 42-21 victory against Florida.
For the season Cooper has 43 receptions for 655 yards and five touchdowns. The Alabama records are 78 catches and 1,133 yards (both by Julio Jones in 2010), and 11 TDs (Cooper in 2012). He’s on pace to finish the regular season with 130 catches, 1,965 yards and 15 TDs.
Cooper shared the honor with Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott, who completed 15 of 24 passes for 268 yards and two passing touchdowns, and ran for 105 yards on 22 carries and another score while helping lead a 23-20 victory at No. 8 LSU.
Not mentioned in the weekly SEC honors was senior quarterback Blake Sims, who on Sunday was named the Walter Camp Foundation’s national offensive player of the week.
Sims completed 23 of 33 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns, but also had an interception and lost fumble.
It was the most passing yards by an Alabama quarterback at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and the second most in program history. Sims also tied the Crimson Tide record for total yards.
