Alex Golesh hasn’t even coached a game at Auburn yet but he’s already well aware of the most important one each season.
That’s why Auburn’s new head coach is placing particular emphasis on the annual Iron Bowl matchup vs. Alabama. So much so that there’s now one period a day dedicated to the heated in-state rivalry. This comes after the former South Florida coach did a deep dive into the lore of the big game.

“I think the one thing you continuously hear from former players, people that Auburn is really important to, is the last game of the year. Cole, full transparency for me, to even wrap my mind around worrying about something other than today or in a grand scheme of things other than game one, was really, really hard,” Alex Golesh said. “But the more time I spent here and understanding the importance of what that is to not just Auburn people but the people of our state here…It’s a giant deal…We’re going to emphasize it like crazy. “
Alabama leads the all-time series 52-37-1 and has beaten Auburn six times in a row. While Golesh is obviously aiming for overall success in his first season at the helm, he isn’t shying away from the goal of snapping the drought against the Crimson Tide.
“We did it through winter workouts…Our finisher drill was the Iron Bowl. We have former players come in and talk about what it meant to them…” Golesh said. “It’s become something our guys have taken a lot of pride in. It doesn’t take away from the importance of the rest of the year.”
