Former Alabama WR Amari Cooper had an outstanding rookie season with the Oakland Raiders, leading the team in receiving yards with 1,070 yards on 72 catches. It’s no surprise that Oakland QB Derek Carr wants to bond with his top wideout, so the two are rooming together during Raiders camp in Napa Valley, Calif.
The duo, nicknamed AC/DC, spoke to reporters, including CSN Bay Area’s Scott Bair, about talking X’s and O’s after practice is over.
“(As roommates), we get to talk more,” Cooper said. “We are in the room studying plays and we go over some of the things that I can make adjustments on or that maybe he can make adjustments on.”
Carr said he’s enjoying getting to know his playmaking receiver better.
“We’re having a good time, man,” Carr said. “It’s good to come back and just talk ball with him. He tells me his goals, I share my stuff with him and we’re able to… I know how he thinks. I know how he likes to go about his business. I know what he likes to do off the field.
“Amari and I should have the best relationship ever. The same thing goes with all of my receivers and all my teammates, really. The fact that we’re roommates only helps because we get to see each other away from football, away from the coaches. It’s been awesome.”
As Bair notes, the pair likely hopes that their closer bond off the field results in a higher completion percentage on Carr’s passes to Cooper. Last season, Cooper hauled in 58.5 percent (72-of-131) of the passes thrown his way.
