Ashton Daniels says ‘things didn’t work out’ with plan to return to Auburn
Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal earlier Sunday, and the former Stanford signal-caller published a post on Instagram that explains the reasoning behind his departure.
Despite originally expressing a desire to return as a Tiger and work with new head coach Alex Golesh, Daniels simply stated that “things didn’t work out how I thought they would.”
This is a post I never wanted to or thought I would make, but I am trusting God’s plans for me. I know I promised a return to this amazing place, but things didn’t work out how I thought they would.
I’m so grateful for the past season and the time I got to spend at Auburn. It’s truly one of the most special places in the country, and I can’t thank God enough for giving me the opportunity to be here. I’ve developed in a way that I never thought I could both on and off the field, and I give all the credit to the Auburn community, my teammates, and my coaches. Coach Freeze, Coach Nix, Coach Durkin, Coach Austin and Coach Stone gave me a chance to chase my dreams and they believed in me, so thank you. Thank you to all my brothers on this team that made this season so special for me.
After a lot of prayer and spending time with my family, I’m making one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make by entering my name into the transfer portal with one year of eligibility left. Thank you Auburn. I will always be a Tiger and Auburn will always have a special place in my heart. War Eagle!
Daniels became a spark plug for a struggling Auburn offense when he took over the starting role against Vanderbilt, as he threw for 353 yards, ran for another 89 and accounted for 4 touchdowns while leading the Tigers to a near-upset.
And weeks later during a narrow 27-20 Iron Bowl loss, Daniels produced a similar performance, racking up over 350 yards of total offense and a score.
The Buford, Georgia native will have one year of eligibility remaining.
