The Iron Bowl rivalry runs deep in the state of Alabama, dividing families and friends ahead of the game.

As Auburn prepares for this weekend’s matchup against the No. 1 Crimson Tide, Auburn junior LB Tre’ Williams, who joked with AL.com that he’s not speaking with his godfather ahead of Saturday’s game.

Williams said he’s got some family members who wish him well ahead of the game, but he knows they’re still rooting for the Crimson Tide:

“I have a lot of close family who are Alabama fans, but they root for me just because I’m here at Auburn,” Williams said. “They’re still going to have — they’re still going to be leaning toward Alabama a little bit.”

He said he can tell when his family is just giving him lip service:

“They’ll text me every now and then throughout the week and they’ll tell me good luck, but they’ll add a little Alabama comment, so I mean, it’s just — the rivalry is real,” Williams said. “It can really separate some family members.”

If Williams and the No. 13 Tigers can pull off the upset on Saturday afternoon, though, he’ll be able to hold it over his family’s heads for a full year.

Watch the game on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Central time on CBS.
