Bryce Young can add yet another award to his trophy case as CBS Sports has handed out its 2021 college football awards.
The Alabama quarterback won the Player of the Year honor after he helped the Crimson Tide win the SEC Championship after the loss to Texas A&M.
Young was a runaway winner for this honor, seizing control of the race as he guided the Crimson Tide down the tightrope of College Football Playoff contention over the last two months of the season. Since the loss at Texas A&M, Young threw 23 touchdowns to just one interception over the final seven games of the season, culminating in the 421-yard, three-touchdown performance against Georgia to secure the SEC championship and punch Alabama’s ticket as the No. 1 seed in the playoff.
Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh won the Coach of the Year, and RB TreVeyon Henderson of Ohio State was named the Freshman of the Year by CBS.
Chip Patterson wrote that it was destined to be a unique season, “when 6 weeks into the season we had seen 40 ranked teams take losses, the most of the poll era.”
The season will wrap up with Young’s Alabama team taking on Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl, while Georgia will meet Michigan in the Orange Bowl, both playing for the right to advance to Indianapolis and meet for the national championship.
