The Week 1 slate of college football action came to a close Monday night with Virginia Tech-Florida State. It’s a game where that demonstrated when it came to assessing the Hokies, the coaches were ahead of the writers and the betting public. In the Associated Press poll, Florida State was the higher-ranked of the two teams. The Seminoles were also the betting favorite by a line of about seven points. On the field, Virginia Tech was clearly the better team, winning by three touchdowns.

Nobody gets to take Week 1 off, here are how the 23 other ranked teams in the opening weekend spread out over the Labor Day weekend.

  1. Alabama def. Louisville 51-14
  2. Clemson def. Furman 48-7
  3. Ohio State def. Oregon State 77-31
  4. Georgia def. Austin Peay 45-0
  5. Oklahoma def. FAU 63-14
  6. Washington lost to No. 10 Auburn 16-21
  7. Wisconsin def. Western Kentucky 34-3
  8. Miami lost to No. 24 LSU 17-33
  9. Penn State def. App State 45-38 (OT)
  10. Auburn def. No. 6 Washington 21-16
  11. Notre Dame def. No. 14 Michigan 24-17
  12. Michigan State def. Utah State 38-31
  13. Stanford def. San Diego State 31-10
  14. Michigan lost to No. 11 Notre Dame 17-24
  15. USC def. UNLV 43-21
  16. TCU def. Southern 55-7
  17. Virginia Tech def. No. 19 Florida State 24-3
  18. Mississippi State def. Stephen F. Austin 63-6
  19. Florida State lost to No. 17 Virginia Tech 3-24
  20. West Virginia def. Tennessee 40-14
  21. Texas lost to Maryland 29-34
  22. Boise State def. Troy 56-20
  23. UCF def. UConn 56-17
  24. LSU def. No. 8 Miami 33-17
  25. Oklahoma State def. Missouri State 58-17

The big question becomes how the coaches react to the losses by Miami, FSU and Texas. UT would appear to be ranked too low to stay in the poll after falling to an unranked team. The Hurricanes and Seminoles both turned in duds of performances in primetime for national audiences. The coaches might be more sympathetic to bad games than writers, but plenty of fans came away feeling neither Sunshine State squad is truly one of the 25 best teams in the country.
