College football programs have been unable to conduct in-person or on-campus recruiting since March due to the coronavirus and are currently prohibited from doing so until  May 31.

For coaches and programs hoping to hit the road on June 1 to hit the recruiting trail, it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen.

On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Council Coordination Committee, along with the NABC Board of Directors and WBCA Executive Committee, requested an extension of the current recruiting dead period.

The date selected as the new potential deadline is July 31, 2020.

TCU head coach and NABC President Jamie Dixon issued the following statement along with the recommendation from the NCAA, NABC and WBCA:

“The summer months are crucial to the recruiting process for coaches and prospective student-athletes alike. The NABC is committed to working alongside the WBCA, the NCAA and scholastic and non-scholastic event personnel to encourage the development of alternative evaluation opportunities as soon as circumstances allow. It is important to note that these temporary changes would not decrease the number of available scholarship opportunities.”

“The NABC Board of Directors does not take the impact of this recommendation lightly,” Dixon said. “However, our highest priority must remain the wellbeing of prospects, their families, our current teams, and our fellow coaches. We must also be respectful of the financial burdens that many of our institutions and prospects’ families are currently facing.”

The request from the organizations to extend the dead period in recruiting can be read in its entirety here.
