Dan Mullen is no stranger to Urban Meyer. The Florida coach was the team’s offensive coordinator from 2005-08, when Meyer was in the position that Mullen is now.
Mullen and Meyer still occasionally text and ask about each other’s families. But during an interview on “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Thursday, Mullen admitted he hadn’t been following the situation at Ohio State — the investigation, domestic violence allegations against a former Buckeyes assistant, the three-game suspension for Meyer — that closely.
But Mullen did share his thoughts on the situation as a whole.
“Of course I haven’t been able to follow a lot of the details of the story, being at training camp,” Mullen said. “But from what I’ve seen, I feel bad for everybody that’s involved. It’s an unfortunate situation for everybody that’s involved in that. That’s my feeling, that I do feel bad for everybody.
“We’ve texted, but we don’t stay in touch. To be honest with you, our texting now is probably a lot less about football and more about, ‘Hey, how are your kids doing?’ And with Urban, he has his grandkids. It’s a lot more of that than actual football stuff.”
Meyer reportedly knew about the domestic violence allegations against his former assistant in 2015, but did not follow through with the proper protocol in reporting them. The Ohio State coach has been on administrative leave for several weeks as the university conducted an investigation. That led to Meyer’s three-game suspension being announced on Wednesday.
