Dan Mullen does not want to see the competition for the starting quarterback job drag on much longer. In his Wednesday press conference, Mullen shared a timeline for when he would like to make his decision, but it came with a caveat.

Mullen told reporters he would like to have the competition decided after Florida’s next scrimmage Sunday. The coach, however, may not share who won the job.

“I’d like to have an answer after the next scrimmage,” Mullen said Wednesday. “I don’t know if I’ll share it but I’d like to have one.”

One would expect a QB1 would become obvious during the portions of practice available to the media even if Mullen does not announce the starter.

When asked about the quarterbacks, Mullen focused on general progress.

“They’re coming along,” Mullen said. “They gotta show the confidence. They’re still learning what to do out there on the field.”

Returning starter Feleipe Franks is battling redshirt sophomore Kyle Trask and true freshman Emory Jones for the top spot on the depth chart. Florida hosts Charleston Southern on Sept. 1 to open the 2018 campaign.
