No. 6 Georgia is off to a 2-0 start in large part because of their dominant defense. The Bulldogs have allowed just 13 points this season going into their Week 3 matchup at No. 15 Tennessee.
During ESPN’s College GameDay, Desmond Howard explained why he believes Georgia’s defense is so stout, citing 3 “new pups” who are all juniors: Christen Miller. Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen.
During a breakdown of game tape, Howard called Miller a destructor.
“Why? Because he obliterates 1-on-1 matchups. So they’re going to try to double-team him. Watch the right guard is going to come around to try to help the left guard. Look at Miller,” Howard said. “Stares him up, holds his point and he gets a tackle for loss. That’s the No. 1 pup. Sophomore last year, ready to take a leap.”
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Wilson earned the bullish moniker from Howard during his highlight play.
“He drops his shoulder, runs him into the backfield and gets the sack,” Howard said.
Howard raved about Allen’s hunting abilities.
“Now this coverage is man-to-man across the board with a safety in the middle but CJ is right there,” Howard said. “He’s a spy, or as my man Nick Saban likes to call it, ‘The Rat’. He’s finding the quarterback and he hunts and gets a sack too.”
Howard expects the trio to torment Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar in his first SEC contest as a member of the Volunteers.
“Those 3 young pups, same pound I think they’re going to introduce or baptize our guy Joey Aguilar to SEC football this afternoon,” Howard said.
