It may have taken longer than expected but LSU’s defense finally showed up on Saturday.

The Tigers were never threatened against Utah State, winning 42-6 and improving to 5-0 on the season. With the team’s nonconference portion of the schedule complete, the Tigers are playing their most complementary football heading into the toughest part of the 2019 schedule.

Joe Burrow had another outstanding performance for the Tigers, completing 27 of 38 passes for 344 yards and five touchdowns in the game. Burrow broke an all-time school record on Saturday as he is the only Tiger to ever throw for 300+ yards in four consecutive games.

Following the game, Ed Orgeron’s first thoughts were on his team’s improving running game, which featured 248 yards on 51 carries on Saturday.

“It was great to see all those young backs making some strides,” Orgeron said after the game. “I thought we did a very good job of running the football and controlling the clock. Heck of a gameplan.”

The biggest takeaway from this game was the LSU defense, which only allowed six points in the first quarter before locking down Utah State for the rest of the game.

“Proud of them. (Utah State) didn’t get in the end zone,” Orgeron commented after the game. “We tackled well, we kept the ball in front of us and we rushed the passer well. We looked like an LSU defense today.”

Here is what Orgeron said when asked if this performance was LSU’s most complete of the season.

“No question. We would have been better on special teams, we missed a field goal, we had a couple of missed tackles on special teams but offense and defense played pretty well,” he offered up.

The Tigers are now 5-0 on the year and host Florida in Death Valley. Coach O and his Tigers are already looking forward to the matchup.

“The competition is going to be a little bit stiffer next Saturday night at 7 o’clock, this place is going to be live,” Coach O concluded. “This is why you come to LSU.”
