Alabama’s 2026 high school recruiting class was loaded with blue-chip talent, but perhaps no defensive prospect has higher expectations than Xavier Griffin.

The versatile linebacker signed with the Crimson Tide as a 5-star recruit and the No. 2 linebacker in the country for his cycle, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

On Friday morning, ESPN published a story breaking down all the top true freshman linebackers and their fit at their respective schools in 2026. Here’s an excerpt of analysis on Griffin from Craig Haubert and Tom Luginbill:

Griffin is an ideal “flex” defender, capable of playing various linebacker roles and bringing pressure from the edge, which should allow him to stay on the field. He has even worked inside as a defensive lineman in high school, though that’s not expected to be part of his responsibilities in Tuscaloosa. His ability to impact every snap and chase after the quarterback aligns perfectly with Alabama’s vision for the defense. Griffin’s instincts and all-around playmaking skills position him to quickly become a disruptive defender for the Crimson Tide this fall and an anchor on their defensive front for years to come.

Griffin also drew a comparison to former Alabama standout Jihaad Campbell, who was a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Griffin could be an early contributor for the Crimson Tide on defense and special teams. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds.

Alabama will be looking to take another step forward on defense in 2026. Last year, the Crimson Tide got off to a slow start defensively but finished the season ranked 3rd in the SEC in yards-per-play allowed.

Alabama will hold its annual spring game on April 11.
