Booger McFarland didn’t hold back after Florida defensive lineman Brendan Bett was tossed from Saturday’s 18-16 defeat against South Florida for spitting on an opponent.
“And another thing,” McFarland wrote in a post on (formerly Twitter). “I am giving the next person who gets spit on the free rein to whip some a**. When did spitting on someone become the thing to do.”
This comes just two days after Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter was removed early from the NFL season opener after spitting in the direction of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. So, as McFarland mentioned, when did this become “the thing” in football?
Bett, a Baylor transfer, was ejected late in the fourth quarter after officials flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty — coming right after a 13-yard pass interference call — flipped field position for USF and set up the Bulls’ game-winning drive. Moments later, Nico Gramatica drilled a 20-yard field goal to seal the upset over the 13th-ranked Gators.
Now at 1-1, Billy Napier’s squad faces a brutal stretch: at LSU, at Miami, back home vs. Texas, and at Texas A&M. Bett’s status going forward remains unclear, but Florida doesn’t have time for more self-inflicted mistakes.
