ESPN’s FPI predicts winner of LSU-Mississippi State game

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index LSU is a slight favorite to defeat Mississippi State in the SEC opener for both programs Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The FPI gives LSU at 56.6 percent chance of winning.

LSU (1-1) opened its season with a 24-23 loss to Florida State at Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans on Sept. 4 after having an extra point blocked with no time left in regulation. The Tigers recovered to easily dispatch FCS program Southern, 65-17, in their home opener last Saturday

The Tigers will also welcome the return of running back John Emery Jr., who was suspended for the first two games with of academic issues stemming from the 2021 school year.

Mississippi State (2-0) has opened the season with wins over Memphis (40-23) and Arizona (39-17). The Bulldogs put down the defensive clamps against Arizona, forcing three turnovers and holding the Wildcats to 40 net yards rushing.

Quaerterback Will Rogers threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Six different players had five or more catches, led by Caleb Ducking’s seven receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns.

Mississippi State is a 2-2.5 point favorite on most sportsbooks.
