The Auburn Tigers fired head coach Hugh Freeze on Sunday. The dismissal marks the third such firing, alongside Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin, of the Tigers’ head football coach over the past 5 calendar years.

Auburn hasn’t finished .500 or better in SEC play since Malzahn’s final season (2020). The program is in desperate need of revival. In a cycle with 3 other SEC schools — plus Penn State, Virginia Tech and UCLA — already searching for new coaches, the Tigers will likely have to pay up for whoever they believe is their man. Before that, though, they have to put a bow on the 2025 campaign.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Auburn a 42.7% chance of reaching bowl eligibility. Accomplishing that feat would mean the Tigers went 2-1 under interim coach DJ Durkin and beat either Vanderbilt or Alabama to end the season. FPI obviously doesn’t forecast a win over either the Commodores or the Crimson Tide, but you never know what can happen in college football.

Here are the FPI projections for Auburn’s remaining games:

  • Nov. 8 at No. 18 Vanderbilt – 29.1%
  • Nov. 22 vs. Mercer – 95.5%
  • Nov. 29 vs. No. 4 Alabama – 22.1%

The Tigers and Commodores will kick off at 4 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
