No. 7 Penn State entered Week 6 with a myriad of questions from skeptics because they hadn’t beaten a Power 4 opponent yet. The blame is now getting blasted even more on head coach James Franklin after Penn State’s 42-37 against previously-winless UCLA on Saturday.
Penn State trailed by as many as 17 to a UCLA squad that was 0-4 entering the game. UCLA struggled so much prior to this that they never held a lead until the Penn State game. Penn State is the first top-10 team in the last 4 decades to fall to an 0-4 or worse opponent, according to Field Yates.
The Nittany Lions allowed the Bruins to produce 435 yards and go 10 out of 16 on 3rd downs. Particularly, UCLA’s rushing attack imposed its will, led by 128 yards and 3 touchdowns from dual-threat quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
As expected, social media erupted with criticism for Franklin and Penn State in regards to the listless showing for a second straight loss.
It’ll be interesting to see how far Penn State plummets in the polls. Many disagreed with the minor dip they received after losing to Oregon. The Nittany Lions will aim to avoid a 3-game losing streak when they host Northwestern in Week 7.
