Ryan Anderson was trying to make the New York Giants’ roster during training camp. Now, it’s a guarantee the former Alabama linebacker won’t be suiting up for them, at least early in the 2021 season.

On Saturday, the NFL announced that Anderson has received a 6-game suspension for violating the league’s policy and program on performance-enhancing substances. However, he’s still allowed to play in the Giants’ final preseason game against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Anderson will be eligible to return to New York’s active roster on Oct. 18, if he remains with the team.

After playing at Alabama from 2013-16, Anderson was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Over the past 4 seasons, he logged 86 tackles and 6 sacks in 52 games with the team, mostly serving as a backup.

Anderson signed with the Giants this past offseason, but he was listed as a fourth-string linebacker on the team’s first unofficial depth chart. So it’s possible he was going to end up getting cut before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET roster deadline.

Perhaps that will still be the case, or New York could potentially place him on the reserve/suspended list.
