Former Alabama and Toledo quarterback Phillip Ely was named to the Iowa State coaching staff on Friday, joining the program as a defensive graduate assistant.
Ely spent three years with Alabama (2011-13), appearing in six games as the team’s backup quarterback during the 2012 season. He acquired two national championship rings during his time with the Crimson Tide.
Despite missing the majority of the 2014 campaign — his first with Toledo after transferring — Ely was named the team’s starter in 2015, where he threw for 2,965 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading the Rockets to a 10-2 (6-2 MAC) record and a 32-17 win over then-No. 24 Temple in the Boca Raton Bowl.
